The purpose of celebrating this day is to create awareness about the importance of civil defense. This day is celebrated by the International Civil Defense Organization i.e. ICDS. On the same day the ICD was recognized by the United Nations as an intergovernmental organization.

In 1972, the ICD member states approved the organization’s current constitution. This constitution came into force on March 1 of the same year. Therefore it is celebrated on 1st March only.

The main objective of the World Civil Defense Organization is to work towards the protection of people around the world. Today a total of 58 member states and 17 observer states have joined this organization. And their number is increasing day by day.
