The day was first organized by the United Nations General Assembly on 23 September 1951 during the establishment of the World Federation of the Deaf for the Deaf.

Its main objective was that there should be no discrimination against the deaf people and their human rights, therefore the main objective was to make them aware, this was first initiated by the World Federation of the Deaf.
